AOA Thursday 5-18-2023

Thursday's AOA began with Chris Robinson, Robinson Ag Marketing discussing the ongoing breakdown in the wheat market and his outlook for handing grain risk over the summer. In segment 2, Joe Smentek, Executive Director of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association discussed their ongoing lawsuit against the state of Minnesota for trying to adopt the California Clean Air requirements. Electricity expert and author Robert Bryce joined the show next to discuss EPA's most recent clean power plant and the outsized impact these rules could have on rural electictric grids.

 

AOA Wednesday 5-17-2023

Wednesday's AOA took a good look at the grain markets, with Steve Nicholson of Rabo Research outlining his expectations for grain market supply and demand over the next seven years, followed by Krista Swanson, Chief Economist at the National Corn Growers Association, who addressed the potential impact of the Black Sea Grain Export Corridor going away. The show closed with Chuck Conner, President and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, who outlined the objections the Agriculture Workforce Coalition has with the most recent Secure the Border Act and the the path ahead for ag labor.

AOA Tuesday 5-16-2023

Tuesday's AOA began with an update from DC with Iowa's Senator Charles Grassley. He spoke about the Prop 12 decision, the impact of debt ceiling negotiations, and a farm bill update. In segment 2, NCBA CEO Colin Woodall joined with a look at the conversations happening around checkoff reform and how the Checkoff works. In segment 3, attorney Eldon McAfee of Brick Gentry law firm in Des Moines discussed the Supreme Court decision on Prop 12 and its impact on pork producers. Tuesday's AOA closed with DuWayne Bosse, Bolt Marketing, about the sell off in soybeans and his expectations for feeder cattle going forward.

On Monday, AOA examined the impact of higher cattle prices on packer profitability before speaking with John Baranick of DTN Weather about what he's expecting in the forecast for the week ahead. Darin Newsom, Senior Market Analyst at Barchart joined for a discussion of the grain markets in segment 3, and why he's watching the large short position in the cattle market.

On Friday's AOA, Mike looked ahead to the WASDE estimates for that report coming out later on Friday, then had a conversation with Tirzah Duren, Director of Tech Policy with the American Consumer Institute about improving the efficacy of SNAP through grocery delivery. In segment 3, Robin Schmal, Dairy Analyst with AgMarket.Net discussed the challenges facing dairy producers in 2023. And we closed the show with Greg Soulje, Meteorologist from This Week in Agribusiness about the forecast for the week ahead.

In segment 2, Josh Baethge, Policy Editor at Farm Progress broke down several recent announcements from the USDA and the pushback on speed limiter devices. Dr. Glynn Tonsor, Ag Economics Professor at Kansas State University joined the show for an update on the Meat Demand Monitor for April.

Wednesday's AOA began with a look at the markets following the most recent CPI report with Mike Zuzolo, of Global Commodity Research and Analysis. In segment 3, Dr. Rob Johansson, Director of Economics and Policy Analysis at the American Sugar Alliance discussed the factors moving the sugar price and the goals of the industry with the '23 Farm Bill. Wednesday's show closed with Mike Crane, of CENEX.

Dan Halstrom, President and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation joined the show in segment 3 for a look at the strong pork exports of March and we closed with Norita Taylor, Director of Public Affairs at the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association who talked about the proposed speed limiter rule and efforts to stop it.
